The Island Inn Show, "MONHEGAN ENERGY" May 23rd to October 12th, 2025

"Michael Vermette has his own style. I am personally drawn to the paintings that have a good bit of dark and light – so dramatic, and clean – crisp with wonderful shadows, but truly, I love them all." Barbara Stroud editor of ArtFoodHome.com.

"We retired to Maine last April and live in Freeport on Wolf Neck. Celebrating our 46th wedding anniversary, we visited Monhegan Island for the first time the weekend before last. Wonderful place and Kerrie captured a spectacular, I mean truly spectacular, sunset from the porch of the Island Inn. While visiting the Lupine Gallery, Kerrie said she loved your painting (only one she really liked..."wonderful colors"), The Gully. I surprised her with it yesterday as my anniversary gift. I assume it is always a good thing to learn that one's work brings joy to another person."- Best, Ed Moser.

Description:

Come challenge your painting skills against the most amazing out-to-sea island environment in the Gulf of Maine. Get acquainted with multiple Monhegan locations while walking in the very footsteps of the original masters who first ran their " Race", namely, Robert Henri, George Bellows, and Randall Davey. Paint alongside two Maine College of Art alumni who have been painting for over 50 years.

Instructor Michael E. Vernette, a Monhegan resident artist in 1999, award winning plain air painter, and featured Island Inn artist of 2025, Also award winning plein air painter Eric Glass as the workshop assistant and historian for students in these highly productive 4 days of Plein air painting.  The workshop will be based at the picturesque Island Inn, originally built by Frank Pierce on a bluff with a commanding view of the harbor, the Barnicle shop and pavilion area, where we will hold our group critiques and Monhegan Artist presentations. This is intended to give the participants a solid foundation from which to build their painting experiences.  Here, the artist will collect information by establishing a painting rhythm with the island that produces fresh, spontaneous painted sketches as opposed to finished paintings.  Come and experience what Robert Henri spoke of in his book, "The Art Spirit".

"All the past up to a moment ago is your legacy. You have a right to it. The words of ancient masters, those of the student next to you, the remark let drop a moment ago, all is experience, race experience".  - Robert Henri
